Making your website visible to the search engines with your Meta tags.

Last time we talked about how search engines work and some of the things they like to see. In this weeks Abby's Corner we'll talk about making your website visible to the search engine.

 

Hi my name is Abby,

 

It's good to see you here again. Hopefully I was able to give you some good insight into the search engine and how it works in basic terms. Search Engines are complex programs that look through your website and use complex formulas to determine how your site ranks. I didn't mention the formula last time because nobody except the folks at the search engines really know how they work. We can only guess based on rumor and tidbits of information from other SEO experts. It keeps the Black hat SEO "experts" from cheating the system. We'll talk about that sometime later.

 

So you have your website and you're hoping Google sees it. Sounds simple right? Well it's not quite that simple. The spiders come to your website and look at the things you have there. They look at your Meta tags. Meta tags are used to input information about your website The information for this week are the title tags, the description tags and the keywords tag. Title tags, what is the name of this site or page? The description tag, what is this site about? This is many times where the search engines get the information they display when you search for something. Last but not least, the keywords tag, what words are pertinent to the information on the page. This is typically the words your potential customers will be using to search for you. If you sell dog food, one of your keywords should be dog food. You can also list the areas that you sell dog food in, Cleveland dog food seller. The types of dog food should be listed as well on the appropriate pages, lamb flavored dog food, puppy food, etc. 

 

These are fairly simple to do but very important to get right.  Think about how someone would find you and what would they want to see on your ad to make them click on yours as opposed to somebody else's. You don't need to have long titles, but titles with keywords in them are better. Your descriptions should describe the page information but don't make them long, and use keywords here too. You keywords are just that, keywords. Use the words that your customers would use to find you. 10 to 15 good keywords would be a great start if you can.  There are many good keyword tools out there to help, just do a Google search and start with those.

 

You should do this for every page, optimize the title, description, and keyword tags. Some say they don't matter anymore, well I just don't buy that idea.

 

The things to remember are:

  • You should optimize the pages on your site to make it visible to the search engines
  • The title tags, description tag and keywords tags are what the search engines use to find you, determine what your site is about and how to display it when some one searches for you. Make sure the information you put into these tags match what your pages say.
  • Don't discount the Meta tags like some experts say, I think they still have relevance in the search engine world.
